Engine: Yes
Year built: 1979
Material: GRP
Designer: Laurent Giles
Description: The Westerly Centaur was designed in 1968 by Jack Laurent Giles as a more modern and roomier replacement for the existing Westerly 25. She was probably the first mass production yacht to have had the design tanktested before a prototype was built, and this, plus Laurent Giles's earlier experience with bilge keel designs, was probably the reason for the Centaur's good performance under sail. Looking at a roomy boat with good headroom and a powerful diesel makes many people regard Centaurs as motorsailers. They are not they actually sail very well, although as bilgekeelers they are always going to be slower to windward than similar sized finkeelers.

Description: Built in 1904 by Edwin Rowles at Pill near Bristol, Cariad Welsh for Dear One is one of the oldest Bristol Channel pilot cutter listed with the National Historic Ships Register. The Bristol Channel was probably one of the most dangerous shipping lanes in the world with its huge tidal range, sand bars and rocks. At the height of the coal trade in the latter half of the 19th century thousands of ships were making for south Wales ports , each one looking for a pilot for the last leg of the journey. These cutters are generally seen as the most successful fore and aft rigged boats built during the age of sail, their function being to ferry out pilots to shipping making for Cardiff, Newport and the other Bristol Channel ports. Speed was of the essence for these craft as the first pilot to a ship usually got the job, and given the nature of the currents in the channel sea kindliness was a must. Cariad spent most of her working life with Pilot Thomas Richards as a Cardiff pilot cutter and was the last sailing pilot cutter in 1922. Later she became a private yacht owned by Frank Carr who wrote about his experiences aboard her in ‘A Yachtsman’s Log’ She is still privately owned and recently underwent a full refit at Bristol.

Description:

Vera Causa took part in the 2008 Seafair Haven, when she was part of the Sail and Oar Flotilla based at Llangwm. She is a restored example of a Skipper 17 dinghy, built in 1979 by Anderson, Rigden and Perkins of Whitstable, Kent. The Skipper 17 was designed around 1963 by Peter Milne, whose other famous projects included the Fireball racing dinghy, the Nicholson 27 and the Stag 28. He designed Donald Campbell's Bluebird 320 waterjet-powered speedboat and his Bluebird 520. The Skipper 17 has the almost unique feature of twin (side-by-side) steel centreplates, which are fully retractable for easy launching and recovery from a trailer. The plates provide stability while avoiding the need for an obstructive casing down the middle of the cabin.
Vera Causa was sailed for many years on the Norfolk Broads by various owners before being bought by a member of the Rhymney River Sailing Club in Cardiff, who sailed her on the Bristol Channel. I bought her in 2007 and, after restoration, brought her to her new mooring on Llyn Clywedog in Powys, 280 metres above sea level.
